In’t Spinnekopke
A historical establishment finally gets a breath of fresh air in Brussels center.
In’t Spinnekopke was always a beautiful place to go to, in it’s 18th century building, with wood paneling and gorgeous original tiled floors, it’s easy to imagine yourself in another moment in time. It’s now been taken over by a group of young restaurant and bar professionals, all of whom have made their mark in the field. Situated on Bloemenhofplein / Place du Jardin aux Fleurs, a quiet little place which kind of feels like the center’s secret garden, with La Fontaine aux Fleurs and quaint terraces.
The menu has stayed true to it’s roots, made with love and Brussels nostalgia. One thing we’re all happy to see coming out of the kitchen is Bloempanch. This classic dish is native to the Marolles, which many Bruxellois and Bruxelloise have memories at their grand-mother’s house on Sundays, eating this heart warming dish. The history behind this specialty is quite interesting. Bloempanch was also known, years ago, as the poor man’s steak. It was a nourishing blood sausage that was served with baked apples and affordable to low income families.
Of course, whenever I see shrimp croquettes, I can’t resist. These were really good, a very nice shrimp taste, not too much bisque. And the mains were just perfect for a comfort food craving. We had Belgian spinach stoemp with sausage and bacon. But this wasn’t just your ordinary sausage, it was lean and full of flavor and the bacon was so pleasingly crisp and salty. And then for the Flemish Carbonnade. A little on the sweet side, which I really like, with fries and and salad.
In’t Spinnekopke also serves a daily weekday lunch at a very reasonable 14,50 euros. A great place to go to when your in the mood for a heart warming meal with a touch of Brussels history. Check out their beer selection, a delicious variety of Brussels breweries such as Brasserie de la Mule, Van de Kelder and Mort Subite.
