Mussel Season

I’m sorry to say that the Mussel season is over. The best time to eat mussels is from September to Mid-April. On the rare occasion, mussels are ready from mid-August.

The mussels typically found in Belgium are just north of the Belgian coast, in Zeeland, Netherlands. Known for their large size and sturdy texture packed full of taste.
You might find restaurants offering mussels in their off season. But this is their natural reproductive season and will tend to be small and will lack that sea quality we enjoy in mussels.

What’s in Season?

  • Belgian White Asparagus

The white asparagus season is something all Belgians get excited about. They are available from April until end of June. Try the Flemish style or with Belgian grey shrimp.

  • Shrimp Croquettes

Shrimp croquettes are available all year. They are fried mix of Belgian grey shrimp (a national delicacy), béchamel and bisque. They are typically served with fried parsley.
Every year in October, Visit Brussels organizes the Best Shrimp Croquettes competition in October. Find out who the winners were in 2023

  • Maatjes

Maatjes a lightly brined herring, harvested just before they are mature, when they’re considered “virgins”. They are typically served with fresh chopped onions. The maatjes season is slightly variable, as it depends on the water temperature. Normally it goes from late May to late September.
Don’t miss the Maatjes Festival in June, hosted by Noordzee, on Place Sainte-Catherine

  • Ray / Raie / Rog

Ray fish is available all year. It is a flat, wing-shaped fish related to sharks. The classic ways to serve it is "raie au beurre noir" — skate cooked and then topped with a brown butter, caper, and vinegar sauce.
