The scallop shell has a deep historical significance in relation to the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage route to the shrine of Saint James in Compostela, Spain. The symbol dates back to the Middle Ages when the Camino became a major Christian pilgrimage. Scallop shells were practical. They were used as a makeshift bowl, for drinking from streams and as a receptacle for food. Pilgrims would often wear the scallop shell as a badge on their cloaks to signify their pilgrimage status, a symbol of their spiritual journey.
